Masterfully Re-imagined English Cottage in Historic Irvington

A Poetic Expression of Architecture, History and Artistic Restoration by McCulloch Design/Build

With an extensive portfolio of more than a thousand projects completed in Portland, John and his team infuse excellence into every aspect. Transforming a previously humble English Cottage, they have embraced English influences, blending modern elements with the original structure, and paying homage to renowned English residences, poets, and artists. Throughout this transformation, historical resonance sings in each detail. Additionally, practicality was a central focus in John’s design concept, ensuring the home caters to individuals of all ages and generations.

Stepping inside 1729 is a sensory experience, full of architectural delights. The solid wood front door, graced with brass hardware, is set within French-pane sidelights and a transom window. These details give a hint of the thousands of artistic expressions awaiting inside.

This home has architectural elements that may not have been original, but are true to the integrity of the era. Masterfully incorporated into the home is the peaked Tudor-arch, echoed throughout rooms, it weaving together the vintage theme

Dramatically refinished oak floors unify the main level, creating a seamless continuity that binds the rooms together, akin to a comforting blanket. A grand doorway linking the living and dining areas blurs the boundaries, transforming the space into a dreamy great-room setup rarely seen in a century-old house. The seamless flow into the dining and living areas creates a comfortable, casual, and inviting atmosphere. The carefully selected millwork, lighting, hardware, and colors add an air of effortless sophistication.

The dining room features thirteen French-pane windows and doors that open onto the expansive wrap-around patio. Originally fixed panes, McCulloch saw an opportunity to elevate the dining experience by transforming them into five sets of French doors, with intricate French Cremone bolts that add a touch of elegance.

The kitchen is where the English influence reigns supreme. McCulloch’s artistic expression honors the original era of the home. Inspired by the 19th Century English artist William Morris, the elegant lattice design on the cabinets nods to nature-infused art. Morris always worked nature into his designs, a theme that was thoughtfully integrated into this kitchen. Classic Carrara marble and a farmhouse sink bridge the old and new, while a cozy breakfast nook under skylights adds a dreamy touch. Restored light fixtures from the 1920s set the mood with a flick of a dimmer switch.

A chef’s island offers extra counter space and storage below with pull-out shelves, soft-close cabinets, and drawers. The abundant electrical outlets will satisfy a chef of any level. Drawer style dishwashers are ready to help with the clean up - perfect for accommodating smaller, intimate get-togethers to large group gatherings.

This home features two primary bedroom suites, one on the main floor and the other on the second. The main floor suite includes refinished oak floors, a gas fireplace and a walk-in dressing room with a vanity.

This upper level was not originally part of the home. This is where McCulloch's expertise truly shines. By raising the roofline and adding skylights, a bright and welcoming second level is the result, with three bedrooms, two full baths as well as a secondary laundry set-up. Incorporating old-growth fir floors throughout the rooms gives the impression that these spaces have existed since the home's inception.

McCulloch showcases remarkable ingenuity in optimizing the space within the second level primary suite by integrating seven closets. Each meticulously crafted door, drawer, and organizer features premium finishes. Abundant natural light floods the room, courtesy of a sun tunnel and a skylight. Bathe in the elegant slipper tub while stargazing through the skylights. Imagine starting your day by opening the skylight in the walk-in shower to invite in revitalizing cool air–a life-affirming start to any morning.

The lower level showcases a bonus room for media entertainment and games. This level also includes a charming bedroom, and a full bath with a laundry area. The allure of the romantic Renaissance era is reflected in the stone tile floors, custom doors with strap hinges, and robust several inch thick arched doors acquired from a dismantled castle in Washington.

 The Gardens:

A basalt wall stretches around two sides of the home, crowned with a cedar fence. A Portuguese laurel hedge creates a tranquil and private setting.Cottage garden favorites like blooming camellias, climbing roses, and perennials create a symphony of colors while meandering paths connect patios and porches, inviting visitors to wander and admire nature’s beauty.

The gardens, infused with English influences, were meticulously designed as a harmonious extension of the home.

The patio envelops the southeast corner of the house, offering an optimal space for outdoor gatherings. The dining room opens on two sides, ensuring a seamless connection between the indoors and out for a remarkable dining experience throughout the seasons.

A sunken amphitheater offers an ideal setting for post-meal storytelling, gathering together around the fire feature, or set up a projector for outdoor movie nights. A secret water feature adds an element of enchantment and intrigue. Imagine the tranquility of a revitalizing summer rain shower whenever you wish.

The current residents have utilized the enclosed one-car garage for storage purposes. Additionally, a staircase has been added to grant direct access to the main floor primary suite. The removable staircase can make way for a special vehicle or a lift for mobility challenges. The driveway serves as additional parking.

It wouldn’t be a proper English cottage if it didn’t have a thatched style roof. Thatched roofs have a rustic and charming appearance that adds character and English authenticity. Old-growth, tight-grain red cedar shingles were soaked in water and ammonia, on-site, for four months. Then each shingle was microwaved for four minutes, maximizing pliability. Each shingle was custom shaped and applied, caressing the roofline like a couture garment.

The Location:

Historic Northwest Alpahbet District Townhome

Welcome to the Historic Campbell Townhome Condominiums: Built in 1893, Converted to Condominiums in 1973 and placed on the National Historic Register in 1980.  Each of the six residences has their own unique profile. Here at 1719, we see hand-carved posts, supported by a base of hand-chiseled basalt, set atop brick columns, which support the covered front porch. An archway of brick leads to the handsome front door, likely crafted from old-growth Douglas fir. A leaded, stained glass circular window is set within the door, complementing the transom window above.

Stepping inside 1719 is a sensory experience, full of architectural delights. Pocket doors lead to the living room, graced with 12' ceilings and old-growth Douglas fir floors. Original millwork, including picture rail and base molding, grace the walls. A three-sided recessed window bay is punctuated by ornate corbels. Each window is trimmed with original molding including bulls-eye rosettes. The leaded, stained glass window is accented by faceted amber jewel-like gems. A newer gilded chandelier is suspended from the tall ceiling and demonstrates how modern elements incorporate into this space beautifully. An expansive doorway, with pocket doors, leads to the formal dining room resulting in an open connection between the two spaces.

The formal dining room has an original fireplace, which was originally for coal, and is a decorative relic today. Pristine original details, such as the fireplace, show this home has been loved, revered, and celebrated by its owners. The carved mantel, tile hearth, and cast bronze surround are delightfully intact - down to the original Egyptian Revival faceplate. Imagine the dinner parties set amongst this room resplendent of comfort and plentitude. A second gilded chandelier cohesively ties the dining and living rooms together.

Old-growth fir floors lead to the kitchen, which has been masterfully updated in keeping with the charm and character of a century-old home. Tried and true surfaces, including slab absolute honed black granite and subway tile backsplash, with a crackle glaze finish make clean up easy. The generously sized apron front sink aesthetically ties the present to the past. Stainless steel appliances are a lovely juxtaposition with the brass hardware and light fixtures.

The kitchen opens to a sitting room, which could also be used as a breakfast nook, with a wall of built-in cabinets. A back staircase leads to the second level and the lower level.A deck is located off the sitting area, perfect for growing a container garden or snipping fresh herbs for finishing touches on a meal. This deck overlooks the common courtyard that is shared with the other five townhomes.

The dramatic staircase leads to the second level and is accented by a leaded and stained glass window. The spacious lending has  Old-growth fir floors lead through each of the three bedrooms on this level. Old-growth solid wood doors are adorned with ornate original hardware. The full bath has been masterfully remodeled incorporating modern luxuries.

The lower level has a large bonus/family room. This level also has a small non-conforming bedroom, a full bath, and an exterior door - it could make an ideal guest or mother-in-law quarters . This level also has laundry facilities, complete with a full-sized washer and dryer, plus a utility sink. Just outside the laundry room is a flex space with two storage closets and a door to the private common courtyard.

The common courtyard is a secret oasis in the city. From the street, no one would ever know this special and unique setting is nestled amongst the neighborhood. This urban garden is exclusively enjoyed by the six residences of the Campbell Townhomes. Thoughtfully designed with brick patios and planting beds trimmed with cobblestones - in keeping with the aesthetic of the historic townhomes. The beds are planted with mature camellias, rhododendrons, hellebores boxwood, and ilex. An elevated dining area is set beneath a pergola. A gas-fired firepit has five modern Adirondack chairs at the ready for evening conversation while stargazing. Hummingbirds are frequently seen happily buzzing about, looking for juicy blossoms.

History: These townhomes were nearly obliterated by the wrecking ball in the 1960's when Architect/Neighborhood Activists Bing and Carolyn Sheldon discovered their opulent architectural details and saved them. These six Eastlake meets Queen Anne style brick townhomes were unique for Portland - and are the only brick townhomes in the city today. Thanks to the Sheldons and five other preservation-minded friends, these high-style residences stand proudly today as they did when they were built 131 years ago. Between NW 17th and 16th on Irving, this block is one of the most architecturally intact blocks of the Historic NW Alphabet District. It was this very block that began the historic inventory and application process in hopes of protecting and saving the neighborhood via a historic district. Today the Historic NW Alphabet District is one of the most sought after and beloved neighborhoods in the city.

Conveniently located in the Historic NW Alphabet District situated between 23rd & Avenue and the vibrant Pearl District. NW 21st & 23rd Avenues, only 4-6 blocks away, and are nationally recognized for their shopping, dining, and cultural offerings. Newly revitalized Slabtown adds to the shopping and dining experience with boutiques, restaurants, New Seasons grocery, and specialty shops around every corner. 2814 NW Raleigh Street

How 2814 NW Raleigh Came to Be: Longtime NW Portland resident, Vida Lee Mick, was a woman with vision. She owned and ran the legendary Foothill Broiler, our neighborhood’s living room, in the Uptown Shopping Center.  This was the hub of social and business goings-on energized by delicious home cooked food and Vida’s watchful supervision. She was a longtime resident of the NW neighborhood Willamette Heights.  This was the neighborhood she knew and loved, but that also knew and loved her—it nurtured and held her family for decades.  A rare opportunity to buy a piece of land in NW came up and she jumped on it.  She hired Lindley Morton of Green Gables Design and reached out to family friend and architect Don Merkt. Merkt, Morton and Mick harmoniously blended the aesthetic Vida Lee desired.  She loved the Pacific NW, and the close proximity to the Forests and nearby Forest Park. She loved Oregon’s coastline and the charm of coastal cottages and she especially loved Mt Hood’s historic landmark, Timberline Lodge.

Morton says building this home was a communal effort. Artisans and family members contributed to the details. The result was a unique modern cabin, where coastal,  even nautical influences, came together in this truly special home. Cedar board and batten siding meet expansive windows and French doors. Roof overhangs are accented with barge rafters and bracketed supports—giving a nod to the nearby Arts and Crafts home Vida Lee raised her family in.  The front door of the home has a covered front porch which leads to the private front patio. This patio is oriented and enjoyed from the entire main floor of the home. The front door of the home has 16 inset beveled glass panes. Hand-forged iron hardware sets the tone and is an indication of the architectural details and craftsmanship inside the home.

Stepping inside 2814 NW Raleigh we can feel the elevated care that was taken in conceptualizing this unique, light-filled home. Clear vertical grain fir millwork trims all the thoughtfully placed windows and doors.   A built-in window bench is a perfect place to cozy up with a book. Even the window sills are a little deeper compared to most newly built homes. These have  just enough room for a cup of tea and a pair of binoculars for gazing at the mountains. The interior walls  of the home have been freshly painted, enhancing the natural fir woodwork. In the living room is a spacious layout with a bank of French doors, which open to the northeast facing patio. Oak hardwood floors run through the main floor tying the rooms together with an expansive great room effect. A gas fireplace, with an elevated brick hearth, is finished in stucco with a slab of clear vertical grain fir as the mantle.  Handmade tile, by family member Marlys Mick, adorns the surround and complements  the cool tones of Mother Nature framed in the windows.

Adjacent to the entry is an alcove with a coat closet. The closet doors are fashioned from clear vertical grain fir with frosted glass panes. When the closet light is on it exudes a warm glow. To the right of the coat closet are built-in clear vertical grain fir “floating” shelves and a cabinet for stereo components.

In the living room half height walls, topped with CVG fir, create an openness between the kitchen and dining room resulting in a feeling of cohesive and connectedness.  A pair of columns punctuate the two steps transitioning into the dining and kitchen areas.

The dining room is set within a three-sided bay, with natural fir wainscoting lining all the walls. This space can accommodate any size of table with various orientations.

The kitchen sits just above the living room and is appointed with custom clear vertical grain fir cabinets and cupboards—with a modern design on the frosted panes. A marble bar is ideal for appetizers or buffet-style serving. This kitchen was created for a restauranteur, on an efficient scale. A Liebherr stainless refrigerator and a four-burner gas range are at the ready for a chef of any level. A built-in breakfast banquette lends a nautical feel.

On the same level as the kitchen and dining area is a main floor primary suite, with a walk-in closet and a private wet-room bathroom. A wall of windows brings in natural light. A pocket door with frosted French panes leads to the bathroom and adjacent walk-in closet.

This en suite bathroom includes a tiled walk-in shower, a walk-in closet/dressing room and oak hardwood floors. Adjacent to the shower is a transition to a hallway to the half bath. This transition area has two doors, one leads to the hallway off the kitchen so guests may use this as a half bath. The other door leads to the primary bedroom, for direct access.

The staircase to the second level sits between the kitchen and dining room.  New wall-to-wall carpeting and padding was just installed on the staircase as well as throughout the second floor. The gorgeous natural clear vertical grain woodwork was continued on the second level, which consists of two bedrooms, a full bath, an office with a lookout and                                     the laundry area.

A second primary bedroom sits on the south side of the home. This room has inviting natural fir millwork and bead board lining the walls. A dressing area with two double closets faces west. A view to the east captures delightful neighborhood outlooks including Mt Hood and Chapman Elementary School’s iconic chimney for the annual Vaux Swift return.

Just outside the second primary bedroom is a full bath, where the clear vertical grain fir details are echoed. Across from the second floor bath is a small balconette, appointed with a clear vertical grain fir French door and the same custom hand forged hardware found throughout the home.

The third bedroom for the home would make an ideal guest room as it is cozy and quaint with windows framing outlooks to the neighborhood and the historic Montgomery Park sign to the north.

Residing in the four-sided bay is the office. This second-floor lighthouse-like lookout has a commanding view that includes the Montgomery Park sign, Mt St Helens, Mt Rainier, Mt Adams and Mt Hood– on a clear day. Furniture grade clear vertical grain fir built-in desks and a bookcase reiterate the lodge-like feel found throughout the home. Also on this level is the full-capacity laundry set up.

Architect Don Merkt, also a sculptural artist, created the one-of-a-kind wall sconces throughout the home. Carrying on the tradition of “handcrafted” building practices, the light fixtures are recycled materials such as cue balls and ball chains. Blacksmith Berkeley Tack forged the door hardware. Lindley met Berkeley at the Renaissance Country Fair back in the 1970’s where they shared a passion for the creative arts so beautifully represented in this home.  The hardware Berkeley created for 2814 is similar to the iron hardware found at the Historic Timberline Lodge’s guest rooms, as Vida adored the aesthetic of the Historic lodge.

The main patio sits off the living room. The brick and concrete patio has a fence around the perimeter and is perfect for container gardening as it receives ample south light. This inviting space is used as an extension of the house. Throw open the French doors and you have indoor/outdoor living on gray days.

The home sits above the street which affords light-filled living and a four mountain view. The driveway pulls up to the back of the house, which makes for unloading easy.

Features and Details for 2814 NW Raleigh Street:

· Built 1985—Collaboration by the homeowner, Vida Lee Mick, and local builder Lindley Morton and Architect Don Merkt. Merkt, originally from the Bay Area of San Francisco, was influenced by Architect Bernard Maybeck of the Arts & Crafts Movement. One day Merkt was craving a hamburger and stopped in a Foothill Broiler, he left with a lifelong friend, Vida Lee Mick. When he was approached by Mick to design 2814 he wanted to ensure, as a single mother of six children, she would be comfortable and cozy but still have offer gathering space for the family gatherings. Merkt, also an artist and metal sculptor, designed the unique light fixtures, works of art in themselves, out of unexpected materials.   Lindley Morton is the founder of the renowned design, build, and restore firm Green Gables. Fun fact: This was Lindley Morton’s first Portland residence and he continued to stay involved as the homeowner made modifications to age in place decades after the home was built.  Lindley compared the building of 2814 to a “Barn Raising” affair as the whole community pitched in—photos available on the corkboard in the house. Artisans were brought in including blacksmith Berkeley Tack, who did the custom “Timberline Lodge” inspired hardware. Family member Marlys Mick made the tiles around the fireplace and in the kitchen. One of the highest honors the Mick Family could have bestowed on the home’s builder is this; Ted Mick, Vida Lee’s son, named his eldest son Lindley.

The gourmet kitchen has been tastefully updated with two Shaw apron-front sinks, slab granite counters and nickel finished faucets and hardware on the cabinet and drawer fronts. A commercial grade Viking range, with six burners and a griddle, is set within a tiled recess finished with an extensive built-in hood. Pull out spice racks on either side will delight a chef of any level. The overhead lighting was updated to LEDs in 2014. The double sized Subzero French door refrigerator, with four freezer drawers below, is incognito beneath custom cabinet and drawer front panels, lending a cohesive old-world feel. An Asko dishwasher is also concealed by a panel front. The second Shaw apron-front sink, with nickel finished faucet, is ready for the sous chef. Below the counter is a built-in wine cooler. The second door connects the kitchen to the formal dining room. A set of back stairs also connect to the kitchen from the second floor—from a time when a staff helped maintain the home and served meals.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the formal dining room with gorgeous box-beam ceilings and a stunning bank of Douglas fir and leaded-glass built-ins. The dining room is full of show-stopping architectural details. The bank of 5 French pane windows, trimmed in clear vertical grain Douglas fir, complement the built-ins below. There are six narrow drawers that would’ve originally held silverware and cutlery located just above the eight leaded-glass cabinets doors. The box-beam ceilings are accented by light bulbs in four corners and a chandelier is suspended from the center of the ceiling. A French pane door leads to the wrap around teak deck—allowing entertaining to flow outside. The oak floors have a basket weave pattern in the corners. Imagine the parties this room has held.       If the walls could talk they would whisper secrets about the vibrant inhabitants and guests. They might break the first and second rule of Fight Club, revealing this home, both inside and out, was featured Chuck Palahniuk’s best-selling comic book Fight Club 2. These floors have been danced across for a century and have hosted large scale parties and intimate gatherings for literary geniuses in the recent years.

Adjacent to the dining room is a sitting room used as a library. One of the many reasons the current owners fell in love with the house is for the entertaining floor plan and the many rooms that can accommodate bookshelves. Being a NY Times best-selling author and comic book writer, Chelsea Cain has found both inspiration and sanctuary here. Her extensive research regarding the original owner has revealed fascinating and delightful stories, shared later on the history page. She and her husband, Marc have certainly amplified the rich story the home continues to reveal. Chelsea herself runs with literary royalty and has hosted writing workshops with acclaimed authors Chuck Palahniuk, Cheryl Strayed, Lidia Yuknavitch, Suzy Vitello, and Monica Drake, along with many others for many years.  The guest list of their parties included a long list of local and national celebrities. More revealed on Chelsea’s “Hello!” page.

The library connects back to the foyer, rounding out the circular floor plan. The main staircase ascends to the second floor.

The primary suite is privately located in the SW corner off its own hallway affording maximum privacy, peace and quiet. This space was extensively updated with a luxurious bath, a walk-in closet and dressing room.

The primary bedroom has two walls of windows, finished with floor to ceiling drapes. The windows frame outlooks to the west hills of Portland. A wall of built-ins are at the ready for clothing, blankets or a TV for a cozy evening in bed with a movie.

This primary suite has a spacious dressing room with custom built-in organizers and drawers. A second closet has a built-in vanity. Both closets have windows to allow in natural light to help you decipher between your blacks and navies. At the opposite side of the primary bedroom is the private en suite bathroom.

The primary bathroom is luxuriously appointed with marble and rich custom woodwork. An expansive vanity has two sinks—one with a filtered water spigot for fresh drinking water. There is also a concealed dishwasher drawer for keeping water glasses clean. The walk-in shower is finished with marble and a seamless glass surround. Custom niches are at the ready for toiletries. There is a private water closet with a Toto toilet and a laundry chute. Reproduction light fixtures were thoughtfully chosen fitting the era of the home.

Located across the hall and a few steps up are the other two bedrooms, a dressing room and a full bath. The NE corner bedroom has two windows that look out the front of the home to the 100+ year old oak tree. This bedroom has old-growth fir floors, a walk-in dressing room outfitted with a built-in wardrobe style closet as well as a built-in dresser with glass hardware. This bedroom is attached to a sitting room, which could also double as a dressing room, a delightful office or an ideal homework spot. This room has two closets, with inset mirrors on the doors, and a set of French doors leading to the second floor balcony. Here one can get up close and personal with the Corinthian columns while enjoying a Portland rainstorm.

The third bedroom is located in the SE corner and has old-growth fir floors and two windows taking in outlooks to the second floor balcony and the mature neighborhood trees. Across the hall is a full bath serving the two bedrooms. This bathroom has marble tile floors, bead board wainscoting, a marble topped sink with chrome legs and a cast iron pedestal tub with shower. The built-in has been modified to a laundry chute and also holds towels and toiletries.

The third floor has been a haven for writer Chelsea Cain. From this aerie she has written her NY Times best-selling novels as well as her Eisner nominated comic book series.

This level comprises of an open studio, with vaulted ceilings and skylights. One of Chelsea’s favorite things about this room is the way the light comes into the skylights early in the mornings.  From here she wrote weekly columns for the Oregonian, many featuring stories about the home and is a guest on various podcasts.

This space is sure to inspire the next steward who inhabits this home. Also on this level is a bedroom with old-growth fir floors. This room has a leaded and stained glass windows which casts beautiful colored light into the room. A French pane door lends privacy from the open studio space. Adjacent to the studio is a full bath with a shower, toilet, skylight and a pedestal sink resulting in an ideal guest retreat. The lower level was extensively updated in 2008 creating a game room with a wet bar, home office or work out room and a state-of the-art home theater room. The game room has stained and polished concrete floors and a cherry bar, complete with a sink. Below the bar is a wine storage rack as well as cupboards and drawers for games. Retro-chic cushioned wall panels enhance the space A half bath is adjacent with a pocket door and a marble-topped carved wood vanity.

A bonus room, with stained concrete floors and cherry built-ins, makes an ideal home office or work out room. A leaded and stained glass window adds character to this level. Across the hall is an updated laundry room with a slab marble folding counter and sink. A full capacity washer and dryer are below with built-in cabinets. Through a French door is access to the   original “pony stall.” That’s right! Mr. Winter had ponies for his children and this was where they were kept. Today it makes an ideal storage room for off-season gear or toys.

Finally! Le piéce-de-résistance! The expertly executed home theater! This space was part of the 2008 basement renovation. It was dreamt up by the current owner, Marc Mohan, who was a film critic with the Oregonian. No expenses were spared in creating a unique and professional home theater experience. The basement floor was dug out for sunken tiered seating. There are seven in-wall speakers and a subwoofer for stunning 7.1 channel sound and a 108” screen. A collaboration between the owner, Studio Coop Architecture, Room Service/now Eighteen Group, and David McNiven of Nice Little Theaters expertly designed and set up the integration, including the starlight-ceiling panels for glamour and pizazz and a ceiling mounted projector for a unique viewing experience. This space has since had many film screenings and hosted many TV club gatherings.

THE GROUNDS: Mr. Maurice Winter was an avid gardener. The property and grounds have been lovingly maintained by subsequent owners ensuring livability was as enjoyable outdoors as much as inside. The front lawn sits above the street and is bordered by planting beds adorned with roses, oak leaf hydrangeas and perennials. The teak front porch spans the front of the house and wraps around the home on two sides, connecting to the dining room. This deck is used as an extension of the indoors in the Spring and Summer. A mature camellia and an artfully sculpted Japanese maple grace the wrought iron railing. The set of French doors off the family room opens to the back cedar deck. A mature concord grape vine, planted by Mr. Maurice Winter, is trained over a trellis. This space is ready for dining alfresco. A staircase leads to a brick patio lined with mature plantings including Italian Cypress, a Japanese maple and beautifully planted pots. A pathway winds around the home connecting to the teak deck at the dining room.

The History of 1525 SE 22nd Avenue - Researched by Chelsea Cain:

The house was built by importing and exporting tycoon Maurice Winter in 1911. You’ll see his name imprinted on the front steps.

If you look on the wall of the boiler room you can see the cursive of the Winter children on the walls. Maurice was born in Bavaria in 1869, and emigrated to the United States as a young man. He made his way west and made his fortune as a Tycoon of imports and exports. He and his wife, Ethel, had three children - Marion, William and Phyllis. The house has a pony stall for the children’s ponies. (Check it out, it still has the pony tie loops.) But also a garage for a Model T, which the Winters crashed rather dramatically in the 1920s. Maurice was an avid gardener and the property included a lot to the south that was Maurice’s rose garden until it was sold in the 1950s. Maurice planted many of the roses along the walk in front of the house, as well as the concord grape vine in the back of the house. There is much more to learn about the house and about the Winters at the Oregon Historical Society. But you have to look up the house under its old street address 293 East Twenty-Second Street) before the city was divided into quadrants and the streets were renamed in approximately 1931. The white address tiles with black numerals were gifted to all residents as a thank you for putting up with an address change. They still hang on many homes around the City today!) The Winters were quite the social butterflies and their names pop up in Society  pages in the Historic Oregonian Articles. In fact even the family dog was written about as it saved two children from drowning in a sweeper wave at the Oregon Coast. The grandchildren and great grandchildren occasionally stop by to check in on the family manor. Above is a sepia photo of the home with the winter children in the front yard.

1442 SW Vista Ave

1442 SW Vista Ave - Ernest Sommers House aka The Doctor's House

Welcome to 1442 SW Vista Ave—Also known as The Doctors House. This home has
been owned primarily by doctors since its inception. A few years later it was ac-
quired by Dr. Emily Belle Cooper Rinehart and her husband Dr. E.E. Ferguson. Dr.
Emily Belle Cooper Rinehart was one of the first female physicians in Oregon.
Though she absolutely loved the home she ended up selling the home to another
physician. However in 1939 Dr. Rinehart’s son purchased the house and it has been
loved and lived in by her family for 3 generations. This is the first time the home
has been presented to market in 84 years.

A pocket door leads to the spacious living room. Here we see the level of attention in
an architect’s handiwork. Coved ceilings meet mahogany picture rail millwork. Oak
hardwood floors are bordered with mahogany inlay. A stately wood-burning fireplace
punctuates the living room.

As you approach 1442 SW Vista you can feel the pedigree of an architect: the low
pitched gable roof has overhanging eaves supported by exposed rafters with rooster tails
accents at the ends. Diamond pane leaded windows are a classic Schacht motif found in
almost all of his homes. A standing seam curved copper porch roof shelters the front
door, which leads to the graceful mahogany foyer. Honduran mahogany graces the
walls, ceilings and floors, windows, doors and the inside of the front door.

The living room has a bank of leaded glass diamond pane windows, with textured
glass to retain privacy while letting light in. French doors lead to a sunroom with
two walls of French-pane casement windows and hardwood floors.

The sunroom, which was added in 1916, leads to the main floor deck which affords
views of downtown Portland, the Broadway Bridge as well as Larch Mountain in the
distance. The sunroom also has direct garage access.

Off the living room, through an elegant arched doorway, is the den. The inlaid
wood floors have an intricate knot pattern in the corners. Mahogany millwork
graces the walls and frames a large picture window that takes in views to the east.

A leaded glass pocket door leads the dining room.

The dining room has a breathtaking curvilinear wall with a bay of four windows and
a door framing views of downtown Portland and connects to the main deck.
The Honduran mahogany millwork is extensive with millwork and inlay in the oak
floors—which still has the call button in the floor to step on when assistance is
needed during a meal.

The adjacent breakfast room has fun wallpaper and two windows taking in views of
the City. The original butler’s pantry, with original cabinetry, has direct venting to
the outside to keep items cool such as pies or root vegetables. Today it works well as
a mudroom with a door at street level to come in with the dog or to unload
groceries after a quick walk to nearby Zupan’s or Trader Joes.

The original swinging butlers door is still intact, connecting the dining room to the
kitchen.

The kitchen is a blast from the past with cheery yellow walls and matching
appliances. It is a rarity to find a home with an intact floor plan—especially with a
spacious kitchen complete with breakfast nook and butler’s pantry.

The kitchen connects to the foyer, completing the circular floor plan. The foyer is com-
plete with a coat closet and a staircase leading to the daylight basement.

A staircase,
graced with hand forged railing, leads to the second floor.
To the south is the primary bedroom, which has maple floors, double hung windows,
wood burning fireplace with tile surround and lots of closet space.
This spacious bedroom has a large closet with built-ins.

Across the bedroom is an
adjacent dressing room with two additional closets. The homes current owners have
affectionately referred to the attached dressing room as the ‘sewing room.’

Just outside the primary bedroom is a full bath. This bathroom also has fun wallpaper
which matches the original burgundy and pink tiles. A vanity with mirror, pin-leg sink
and French style bathtub with shower completes this bathroom.

Across the hallway is a second bedroom. This bedroom has maple floors with a unique
narrow plank. A set of French doors opens into an adjacent room, which could be used
as a dressing room, hobby space or homework space. Both rooms have closets. A

French door leads to the upper view deck.
This view deck has a commanding view. Imagine waking up to this view every morning.

This suite also has an attached bath, resulting in a second primary set up for this
level. The full bath comes with some vintage wallpaper, Celadon green tile floors, and
an original bathtub.

The lower level consists of a storage room with bookshelves, 1 full bath, the laundry/
utility room with a side door, 2 bedrooms with closets and a central entry.

Also on this level is a full bathroom, with a shower.

Off the central entry for this level is
a large covered deck that spans the back of the house. This was likely where patients
would come to visit the in home clinic. This deck has old-growth tongue and groove
deck flooring.

One side of the lower level is daylight, meaning it has an exterior door and full sized
windows. This side of this level served as the in-home medical clinic when Dr. Carle
Rinehart lived here. The current owners affectionately refer to the storage room with
all the bookshelves as the ‘medicine room’. That’s because their grandfather, Dr. Carle
Rinehart, used this room for storing his medicines and medical supplies, hence the
“Hospital Green” color. Dr. Rinehart specialized in surgery as well as arthritis and
rheumatism for which he was very successful at treating. His mother, Dr. Emily Belle
Cooper Rinehart Ferguson, was one of the first female doctors in Oregon and was con-
sidered one of the leading physicians of central Oregon. She specialized in obstetrics
and women’s diseases and founded the hospital in the Dalles and Nurses Training
School. She later moved to Portland, living at 1442 SW Vista (or 302 Vista as it was
known then).

One level below the daylight lower level is a basement which houses the furnace and
workshop for the home. There are some very cool original built-in workbenches with
drawers for tools in this room. This space has a poured concrete floor and an exterior entrance. It would make a
fantastic workshop for a hobbyist wood worker or would serve as fantastic storage for
outdoor gear or off-season storage.

History of 1442 SW Vista Avenue

Since the early 1900's the prominent dynasty of Rinehart doctors have lived in this
home.
Oregon Trail Pioneers, Dr. Emily Belle Cooper Rinehart and Dr. Willard
Rinehart practiced medicine as well as their twin sons, Carl and Earl. Dr. Harvey
Earl Rinehart founded The Rinehart Clinic in Wheeler Oregon in 1913. And Earl and
Ella's son Robert and daughter-in-law, Dorothy White Rinehart continued
the Wheeler practice which thrives to this day as a leader in providing passionate care
on the Oregon Coast. This is the first time the home has been presented to market in
84 years.
From what we can tell we believe Emil Schacht built this house (302 Vista as it was
known then) for Dr. Ernest Sommers. We aren’t sure what kind of medicine Sommers
practiced but he was a doctor. Proceeding Sommers a C.H Gilbert purchased the
house. Then another doctor purchased it from Gilbert, Dr. E.E. Ferguson. He was
married to Dr. Emily Belle Cooper Rinehart Ferguson, who was the current owner ’s
great grandmother, and was the first woman doctor in Oregon. She specialized in
obstetrics and women’s diseases and founded the hospital in the Dalles as well as the
Nurses Training School. Prior to marrying Dr. E.E. Ferguson, Emily was a widow with
four children. Two of which were twins that would go on to become physicians
themselves. Dr. Harvey Earl Rinehart and Dr. Jackson Carle Rinehart. The Fergusons
would eventually sell the house in 1921 to a Mr. Fitzpatrick. This is believed to be the
only other owner outside of the Rinehart Ferguson family blood line to have occupied
the house aside from Mr. Sommers and Mr. C.H Gilbert. Dr. Carle Rinehart special-
ized in surgery as well as arthritis and rheumatism for which he was very successful
and actually created a serum for treating patients. Dr. Carle Rinehart ’s granddaughter
(current owner) has fond memories of seeing her grandfather treat patients both in his
office at the Morgan Building in downtown Portland and at the home on Vista.
Carle would end up purchasing the house we believe from Mr. Fitzgerald and from
that point on the Rinehart family have owned the home until current day.
THE RINEHART/COOPER FAMILY HISTORY
The Rineharts crossed the plains in 1854 and the Cooper side crossed in 1863.
Emily Belle Cooper was just a year old when they crossed the plains in a covered
wagon in 1863. She attended St. Helens Hall, now Oregon Episcopal and later
studied at the old Portland and Willamette Universities where she met Dr. Willard
Rinehart whom she married in 1882. Dr. Willard Rinehart began practicing medicine
at the age of 20 years old in Union Co., Portland, Oregon and later in The Dalles,
Oregon where he was also the mayor. During his residence in Portland, he was
professor of anatomy and clinical surgery in the Willamette Medical College and chief
surgeon of Portland hospitals.
Dr. Willard Rinehart and Dr. Emily Belle Cooper Rinehart had four children, all boys.
Two of which were identical twins, Jackson Carle and Harvey Earle, both followed in
their parents footsteps by becoming doctors. They were very young when their father
passed away, leaving their mother with four boys. The twins went to boarding school
in Newberg, the youngest went to her mothers and the oldest was in the service and
Emily Belle went to medical school graduating in 1897. She went back to The Dalles to
practice and was considered one of the leading physicians of central Oregon.
She specialized in obstetrics and women’s diseases and founded the hospital in The
Dalles and Nurse’s Training School. She later moved to Portland, living at 1442 SW
Vista Ave. and from there retired at age 65 to Seaside, OR where she spent the rest of
her life.
Dr. Jackson Carle Rinehart, was born in Summerville, Oregon on May 6, 1885.
He first attended the Oregon Agricultural College, now Oregon State University, and
graduated in 1904 in engineering. That same year he became the station inspector for
the Portland Railway Light & Power Company in Portland until 1911 when he decided
to enroll as a medical student at the University of Oregon, graduating in 1915.
He joined Dr. Harry McKay in his practice for 2 years and in 1917 he entered in to his
own practice in which he remained until his death in 1967. Dr. Carle Rinehart, as he
was known, specialized in surgery and gained a well merited reputation for his skill
and success. He also specialized in arthritis and rheumatism, developing a serum that
really helped people to recover. I, his only granddaughter, remember a patient coming
from Alaska for treatment. The first time I saw her she could only walk with the aid of
braces and crutches, the last time I saw her she was walking, no braces or crutches and
feeling very good. Another time, he treated a very young man who had been riddled
with rheumatism walking down the hall from my grandfathers office in the Morgan
Building, his mother was crying and carrying his crutches while he walked ahead of
her with no problem.

THE RINEHART/COOPER FAMILY HISTORY CONTINUED:

Another time, we had gone to a marina, a man was there who had some health
problems, grandpa treated him right there. The gentleman was so happy to learn
what he needed to do. I remember him talking about charging young couples $40.00 to
deliver their baby when the going rate was $60.00 because he felt they had enough to deal
with then a huge delivery bill.
His son, James (Jimmie) Rinehart, born in Portland in 1909, became a pilot, built his own
plane from used airplane parts while in high school, and at the age of 17, went to Kansas
and flew from there to the Pacific coast in a plane which he had purchased with his own
money. He taught both his mother, Mary E. Prichard Rinehart, and father to fly.
He was the youngest transport pilot in the United States, receiving his license on his 18th
birthday. He holds the world’s endurance record for 0 X 5 class in the American Eagle
plane at Seaside, Oregon, June 28, 1928. He owned his own corporation—The Columbia
Gorge Air Service, Inc. at Hayden Island and Jantzen Beach Park, all planes, both sea and
land, were built by Jimmie. They were used for sightseeing in the Columbia Gorge and
student instruction. He also established the first passenger route from Portland to the ocean
beaches in 1927, making weekly trips.
Their daughter, Dorothy Mary Rinehart Patterson, attended Jefferson High School and the
University of Oregon graduating in 1937. She married Howard B. Patterson and traveled
the country with him. She prided herself and being a Home Executive. A wonderful wife
and mother.
My grandfather’s mother, Dr. Emily Belle Cooper Rinehart bought the house, at 1442 SW
Vista Ave., in the early 1900’s and years later sold it. In about 1939, my grandfather,
Dr. J. Carle Rinehart bought the house and my grandparents and parents have lived there
ever since. I think there was only one owner between my great grandmother and my
grandfather.

Perfectly Poised Between the NW District and the Heights

Welcome to 2966 NW Cornell Road—poised to take advantage of river and mountain views yet still close to the secret steps along NW Cornell for easy access to the NW Flats. Meandering pathways wind around lawns bordered by mature rhododendrons and vibrant azaleas.

Wrought iron railings accent the front porch staircase and lead to the arched front door.

The entry is graced with original multi-colored tile floor. The adjacent coat closet has hooks and shelves for coats, shoes and bags. A leaded-glass arched window brings in natural light. The entry leads to oak hardwood floors and arched doorways between the living and dining rooms.

The living room is expansive with leaded-glass windows looking out in three directions. A wood-burning fireplace, with a full-height roman brick chimney, anchors the room. There’s a cozy nook that would make a perfect reading or desk area. A bank of three diamond-pane windows frame lush outlooks to Mother Nature.

On the opposite side of the room are floor-to-ceiling leaded-glass windows taking in views of the river and mountains.

A set of leaded-glass French doors lead to a level patio with outdoor fireplace. It is rare to have a level yard when located in the heights. This yard has a wood-burning outdoor fireplace that is original to the house. An arched doorway leads to the great room consisting of the dining area and kitchen.

Wood floors run through the living, dining and kitchen areas, lending a cohesive feel and tying the rooms together. Many of the rooms are accented by antique light fixtures that have been restored and carefully chosen to tie into the home’s 1920’s aesthetic.

The dining area is graced by picture rail molding and was recently repainted. The open layout between the dining area and kitchen is rarely found in a home of this vintage. The room was designed for entertaining as the conversation will flow with ease. The chef may put the finishing touches on meals while guest linger around the eating bar.

There is an abundance of storage in this kitchen. Built-in cabinets with pull out shelves are below the Quartz counters and gives an uncluttered, open aesthetic. On the north side of the kitchen recycled wood block counters were used to create a work station.  This built-in desk was designed with cable ports, leading to outlets below, and is a lovely place to read, do homework or check emails.

Stainless steel appliances and an extra-deep, under counter stainless sink are at the ready for any level of chef. Original old-growth fir floors have the perfect patina of nearly 100 years of living from the 1920’s to 2023.

Located off the central hall, through an arched doorway and gently curving oak staircase, is the half bath for the main floor—perfect for guests to wash up before a meal.

The oak staircase leads to the second level which has a spacious landing, with two linen closets. This level comprises of three bedrooms and a full bath. The first bedroom we come to faces NW and has two walls of windows and a walk-in closet with built-in storage.

The middle bedroom faces north and has a spacious closet. Inside the closet is a door that leads to a secret room that has been a magical play room for the last two families who have lived here.

The primary bedroom is located in the southeast corner and takes in views of the Willamette river and mountains. Lights from across the river twinkle softly at night.

This bedroom has oak hardwood floors, picture rail molding, leaded-glass windows, a coved display niche and a faux-firebox for an electric fireplace—they were popular in homes built in the 1920’s and 1930’s.The primary bedroom has two spacious closets—a rarity for a home of this era!

Just outside the primary bedroom is the full bath for this level. The bathroom was updated with classic finishes including two pedestal sinks, marble tile floor and a tub with tiled shower surround. Subway tile runs up the walls to the medicine cabinets and a leaded-glass window lets in natural light.

There is a daylight lower level as well. Just past the kitchen door is a staircase, with convenient shelving—ideal for kitchen overstock items. The original fir steps lead to the daylight lower level. On this level is an inviting laundry room, with original laundry chute, and has a sink, a folding counter and enough room for doing hobbies or crafts.

The family room is located on this level. This room was freshly painted and just received brand new carpet. This space has been used as a media room or as an occasional guest suite as there is a beautifully appointed full bath adjacent. This bathroom has a pedestal sink, subway tile around and halfway up the walls, and large hex-tile floors. A walk-in shower with marble hex-tile floor and full-height subway tile surround has two built-in shelves for toiletries. The backside of the bathroom door is mirrored with leaded-glass panes, similar to the windows found on the first two floors, and delights guest who use this bathroom.

There’s a back door, located off the kitchen, which serves as a mudroom. It’s a perfect spot to hang the leashes or kick off the shoes after a walk in nearby Forest Park’s trails. It is accessed off the staircase to the right of the garage.

The garage is attached to the house via a shared driveway. There is enough room for 2 cars to park outside the garage and there is a handy turn around in the middle of the driveway. There’s also a convenient convex mirror at the foot of the driveway for easy pulling out.

The backyard is a level patio with newly installed water-permeable synthetic turf—low maintenance means no mowing! French doors right off the living room creates a perfect setting for dining al-fresco. Roast s'mores in the wood-burning fireplace and enjoy by the twinkle of the lights across the river at night!

Location: This uniquely positioned home has one foot in the heights—hello panoramic view! And the other foot in the NW District—perfect for wandering to all this coveted neighborhood is known for and connect with all that makes NW Portland so  special. This property sits on nearly a 8,700 SF lot with convenient access to Forest park’s nearby trails or a quick drive up Cornell to Beaverton, Hillsboro or     Downtown Portland in the opposite direction. Its rare to have a view, a level yard AND walkable proximity to the NW District. Cornell Road also has a few sets of public “secret” stairs giving pedestrians convenient access to all the NW Flats has to offer. That means easy access to Wallace Park, Chapman School and NW 23rd Avenue. Wander to any of the boutiques, cafes, restaurants and shops along NW 23rd or the newly revitalized Slabtown development.

The Kenneth Reed House was designed in 1924 by beloved Oregon architect Wade Hampton Pipes. Pipes trained in England at the Central School of The Arts & Crafts and was the first to introduce the English storybook style to Portland. Meticulously maintained and lovingly restored, the home offers modern conveniences skillfully blended with the handiwork of the craftsmen who built it- oak floors, picture molding, bookcases, glass doorknobs, fir floors & French doors are found throughout. The living room is anchored by a cozy fireplace while a large bay window floods the space with natural light. View ancient sequoias & magnificent deodora cedar trees from the sunroom windows. The fully updated kitchen offers a Wolf Range, granite counters and a dream walk-in pantry. The breakfast room is surrounded by a bay window with a built-in bench. Upstairs a primary bedroom enjoys its own private deck in the treetops. The lower level features a family room wth new oak floors and is ideal for casual entertaining or a quiet movie night. The landscaping includes climbing roses, oak leaf hydrangeas, Chinese elm, rhododendrons and boxwoods. The attached 1 car garage was recently re-built & includes a storage space underneath. This Portland Heights residence, based on Pipe's admiration for cottages in the Cotswold District, has long been a source of creative inspiration for those who lived there. In the 1960's author Peg Bracken called this home. Bracken, a humorist, wrote the famous 'I Hate to Cook Book", an irreverent and popular guide. Later, this was the residence of beloved Portland TV icon and Oregonian columnist Margie Boule.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Oak Park Meets Pacific NW Treehouse

With a degree in Architecture, builder and preservationist Rick Michaelson had a vision. Inspired by the forested setting, he incorporated Pacific NW Regional design with a little “tree house” influence, and gave a dash of “Oak Park” flair inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s own home. The result is a unique modern cabin where quality materials like clear vertical grain fir woodwork and solid doors complement maple and travertine accents. Tall ceilings meet dramatically angled walls where skylights and windows frame outlooks of the surrounding forest and bathe the rooms with natural light.

3718 SW Sweetbriar Drive is a lifestyle opportunity certain to enlighten any home dweller. A rare opportunity as this is adjacent to a private greenspace known as Sweetbriar Woods, which offers a native Oregon habitat for the exclusive enjoyment of only 3 adjoining residents. Nestled into the hills of SW Portland, on a quiet dead-end street with convenient proximity to both Beaverton and Downtown and nearby freeways.

A spacious travertine entry greet all who enter. An artfully sculpted maple staircase leads to an expansive great room with 18.5’ vaulted ceilings graced by skylights.  With a “less is more” approach, Michaelson ensured harmony between the setting and the home were in balance. Here he created voluminous, light-filled living spaceswhere Mother Nature is showcased in every thoughtfully placed window.

Features and Details for 3718 SW Sweetbriar Drive:

· Built 2006—Designed by local builders Rick Michaelson and Rob Phillips

· Michaelson and Phillips designed the home with efficiency in mind, utilizing the Earth Sheltered concept, as the earth around the north side of the lower level provides protection and insulation. The lower level stays comfortable and temperate and doesn’t require air conditioning. The tree canopy in the summer provides natural shade and a breeze.  The A/C was added to cool the top two floors.

· The home has two furnaces, one for the top two floors and one for the lower level.

We are charmed by the efficient layout of this 477 SF studio condominium.  New interior and freshly painted walls and ceilings makes this space move-in ready. The brand new air conditioning unit also offers supplemental heating.

The four double-hung windows frame outlooks to a charming adjacent Victorian residence, a relic from when this part of the city was a neighborhood full of residential homes. It is now utilized as a business office. The location of the unit is on the quiet side of the building. Wood blinds add privacy.

The kitchen has a wall of maple cupboards and cabinet, new Formica countertops and sink with disposal. A kitchen island doubles as a breakfast bar. The appliances include a refrigerator with freezer, microwave above the electric range and a new stainless dishwasher.

The open layout is reminiscent of a Manhattan Loft. The studio has a sleeping alcove with a window. Some residents have added a murphy bed in between the living and sleeping area to define the space. The sleeping alcove has a double closet with new sliding louvered doors. The window’s lower edge is higher, in comparison to the other windows, to allow for additional privacy.
